Howdy, Dude is a play on the Hindi phrase "haldi doodh" meaning "turmeric milk" - aka “golden milk” - an old Ayurvedic remedy that utilizes the myriad of health-building benefits of turmeric and other spices. However, if you were to ask anyone who grew up drinking it, you’d quickly discover it’s so much more.

It’s a ritual that helps you stay grounded…a tradition passed down from generation to generation that keeps families connected to their roots…an opportunity to pause, reflect, and breathe. In this way, Haldi Doodh is a remedy for the mind, body, and soul and we thought it was important to honor that when we created our version of it.

Here in Texas, "howdy" means "hello" (or more precisely, "how do you do?"), and "dude" can have multiple meanings depending on where you're from. Astro Botanico is nestled amongst actual “dude” ranches here in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, and a "dude" is a city dweller visiting the country. .Over time, the word "dude" evolved to mean a casual, informal term for a guy. However, “dude” also means "friend"...which is our intended use of the word here.

The symbolism on the label is a nod to our mortality and rebirth or renewal, and stems from my morning ritual of pouring out a little of my drink onto the earth to remember those who came before me…those who were once flesh and blood but have now returned to the cosmos - as we all will someday. It’s also a "watering" of the earth to honor those who'll come after me...depicted by a blooming flower (life) held inside the mouth of a skull (death). It's meant to be a reminder that no one here gets out alive...that life is impermanent, and the very best health we enjoy is still merely the slowest form of death that we can create - if we’re lucky.

So look for the beauty in all things, don't take it all too seriously, and take the time to check in with your amigos and ask, “How are you doing, friend?”.
